Con immenso piacere partecipo, ancora una volta, ad un Blogtour review della Curiosity Quills Press che, questo mese, ha proposto la lettura di questo romanzo sci-fi, al quale non ho saputo resistere. La trama mi è sembrata intrigante e poi si parlava di viaggi nel tempo e - tanto per cambiare - ne sono stata subito attratta.

Rings in time è una storia che rientra in un genere - lo sci-fi - che apprezzo parecchio, anche se il mio preferito resta sempre il fantasy. E' una storia che si presenta come una lettura avvincente ma che, sinceramente, mi ha lasciata un po' titubante. Il romanzo è scritto con una stile semplice, molto conciso, che non è riuscito a coinvolgermi come speravo. Ci si ritrova immediatamente immersi nelle vicende della protagonista, senza il tempo di familiarizzare con lei e con gli altri personaggi. La storia procede molto velocemente, le descrizioni sono brevi e altrettanto succinti sono, molto spesso, i dialoghi.

Jenna ha un migliore amico, Max, con cui parla di tutto e al quale è molto legata. Un giorno lui le presenta Pearl, un uomo molto attraente che attira subito l'attenzione di Jenna. Anche Pearl sembra molto interessato a lei e non ci pensa su molto prima di chiederle un appuntamento. Ma sin da questo primo incontro, l'uomo sembra sia sempre in procinto di rivelarle qualcosa. Cos'è che le nasconde?

Intanto, Jenna inizia a notare una serie di inspiegabili avvenimenti intorno a lei, tutti legati alla tecnologia cellulare. Sta accadendo qualcosa e Pearl sicuramente ne sa più di quanto vuol fare intendere. Del resto, anche i sogni di Jenna sembrano volerle comunicare qualcosa, soprattutto su di lui, quest'uomo affascinante che le fa provare emozioni che non provava da tempo e che, insieme alla sorella, pare serbare molti misteri. Un giorno, ascoltando per sbaglio una conversazione tra i due, Jenna scopre qualcosa che non dovrebbe, ovvero che entrambi non appartengono a quel mondo e ha la conferma che le stanno nascondendo qualcosa di molto grosso. Per quanto Jenna cerchi di tenersi lontano da lui, non riuscendo a capacitarsi di ciò che ha scoperto, sarà del tutto inutile sottrarsi alle insistenze di Pearl, che continua a cercarla per scusarsi e per raccontarle come stanno le cose. E quando, finalmente, riusciranno ad avere un confronto, Pearl le spiegherà chi è e cosa vuole da lei. La Terra sta subendo una forte crisi, a causa dei cellulari, che potrebbero risultare delle armi che, prima o poi, distruggeranno l'intera popolazione. Occorre che qualcuno torni indietro nel tempo per cambiare le cose ed evitare questa catastrofe, ma solo un essere umano con determinate qualità può farlo e, a quanto pare, Jenna sembra essere la persona giusta. 

“So, why am I here, Pearl? Why did you come into the store?” She almost didn’t want to ask the question. It was a beautiful, warm day. Since she didn’t have work, she could be sitting down by the river with a book. Not that there was much river left. By this time of year, if it hadn’t all dried up, it would just be a lazy little trickle. Sitting in a wicker chair on a porch with a man she was crazy about should also be fun, except he was filling her full of disturbing news.

When Pearl was upset, she noticed, there was one little line between his eyebrows that deepened. As she watched, the vertical wrinkle appeared very deeply between his brows. “We need someone―wel , we need you―to go back in time and change what happened so this anomaly with the phones doesn’t ever happen.” 

“Holy crap!” exclaimed Jenna.

La aspetteranno tutta una serie di avventure che non avrebbe mai potuto credere possibile. Lei, una donna e madre qualunque, scoprirà di essere più speciale di quanto immaginava, di poter fare qualcosa di importante, salvare il mondo e, forse, salvare anche la sua famiglia...

Rings in time poteva essere, per diversi motivi, un romanzo originale e interessante, ma lo stile è troppo asciutto, per i miei gusti, e tutto il word-building è inconsistente, privo di fondamento. Non l'ho trovato per niente convincente, senza contare che la narrazione procede veloce, senza mai soffermarsi su descrizioni o approfondimenti di alcun genere, che, invece, sarebbe stato opportuno ci fossero. Anche i dialoghi sono banali e lasciano poco spazio alla parte descrittiva. Le rivelazioni, alle quali si poteva aggiungere un po' più di pathos, arrivano senza sconvolgere tanto, con una protagonista che non riesce ad esprimere appieno lo stupore in momenti tanto importanti. L'autrice non dà spessore ai suoi personaggi, racconta solamente la sua storia, ma un romanzo, per essere credibile, ha bisogno di un lavoro molto più accurato, non bastano delle idee discrete messe nero su bianco. Purtroppo, non riesco a dare un giudizio positivo a questo romanzo, che si è rivelata una lettura noiosa e, il più delle volte, insensata. I viaggi nel tempo, che tanto avevano attirato la mia curiosità ci sono, ma non sono come mi ero aspettata. C'è poca enfasi nel momento del viaggio della protagonista e il tutto viene ridotto a poche parole per descrivere i suoi salti temporali. Insomma, non è certo una cosa che capita a tutti e ogni giorno! Nemmeno la storia d'amore riesce a essere indimenticabile, colpa sempre di una narrazione che non cattura e di personaggi che non arrivano a toccare il cuore del lettore. Pearl e sua sorella Emma potevano essere dei personaggi molto interessanti da scoprire, ma restano come sfocati, in un contesto che è vago quanto loro. Lui e il suo dono di proiettarsi nei sogni, se approfondito meglio, sarebbe stato un elemento originale da leggere, ma non assume abbastanza importanza nel libro. Ringrazio la Curiosity Quills Press e Clare Dugmore per l'opportunità di leggere questo romanzo, sebbene mi abbia dato ben poche emozioni e non si sia rivelato avvincente come avevo, in un primo momento, sperato.

Voto: 2 tazzine! Un romanzo con un discreto potenziale, purtroppo per nulla sfruttato dall'autrice. Peccato!

Review Tour: "Unhappenings" di Edward Aubry

Eccomi nuovamente! ^_^  Adesso vi parlerò di un romanzo letto in lingua che verrà pubblicato tra due giorni, un romanzo di cui vi avevo già precedentemente parlato QUI, quando avevo dedicato un post alla rivelazione della sua spettacolare cover! Unhappenings è una storia davvero originale, che sin dalla lettura della trama mi ha intrigata moltissimo. Sicuramente il fatto che parlasse di viaggi nel tempo ha aumentato la mia curiosità - adoro l'argomento! - e poi volevo proprio saperne di più di questo protagonista a cui succedono davvero cose inspiegabili. Ho partecipato con molto piacere al Review Tour di Unhappenings e ringrazio la casa editrice Curiosity Quills Press per avermi concesso la possibilità di leggere il romanzo in anteprima, in cambio di una mia onesta opinione.

Edward Aubry is a graduate of Wesleyan University, with a degree in music composition.

Improbably, this preceded a career as a teacher of high school mathematics and creative writing. Over the last few years, he has gradually transitioned from being a teacher who writes novels on the side to a novelist who teaches to support his family. He is also a poet, his sole published work in that form being the sixteen stanza “The History of Mathematics.”

He now lives in rural Pennsylvania with his wife and three spectacular daughters, where he fills his non-teaching hours spinning tales of time-travel, wise-cracking pixies, and an assortment of other impossible things.

Nigel Walden è un ragazzo che ha una vita davvero unica, costellata di episodi bizzarri che lascerebbero interdetto chiunque. Le prime volte che ha a che fare con questi strani fenomeni, Nigel ha quattordici anni e non riesce a capire di cosa possa trattarsi. Ogni avvenimento importante della sua vita, ogni cosa buona che fa, è come se non fosse mai accaduto. Il primo bacio, un compito importante, ogni cosa cessa di esistere, si annulla, non è mai avvenuta. Non ricorda cose che dovrebbe ricordare, o persone che dovrebbe aver conosciuto. A volte sono queste persone a non sapere chi lui sia. E poi, ancora, oggetti che appaiono, scompaiono, si trasformano in qualcos'altro. Fenomeni imbarazzanti, il più delle volte, che lo portano a non socializzare con nessuno. Preferisce starsene in disparte e non dar modo alla gente di pensare chissà cosa di lui, assecondando l'idea che si tratti di amnesia e non sia solo un folle. Con il tempo e con il ripetersi di questi avvenimenti, Nigel inizia a fare congetture su congetture, valutando la perdita di memoria, la pazzia, e malattie rare. Inizia persino una terapia con alcuni psicoterapeuti, fino a quando qualcuno di loro non lo riconosce più. Alla fine, l'unica teoria che decide di prendere seriamente in considerazione è quella dei viaggi nel tempo...

Nigel è un tipo solitario, il suo problema lo porta a tenersi a debita distanza da tutti, specialmente dalle donne. Preferisce non affezionarsi, per evitare di causarne inavvertitamente la scomparsa. Ma durante il 2087 incontra una ragazza che sembra conoscerlo e che sa del suo problema. Anche lei vive la stessa esperienza, ma da tutta la vita. Sarà questa ragazza, che lui chiamerà Penelope, a insegnargli tutta una serie di trucchi di sopravvivenza, facendogli desiderare di reclamare una vita sociale che non ha mai avuto. Quando Penelope gli confesserà di venire dal futuro, Nigel non ne sarà tanto sorpreso, perché avrà già avuto modo di scoprire l'esperienza dei viaggi nel tempo, ma sarà Penelope a renderlo realmente un viaggiatore del tempo, fino a quando Nigel non arriverà ad accettare l'idea che quello, alla fine, sia il suo destino. O, forse, in realtà, il suo destino è essere soltanto uno spettatore della sua bizzarra esistenza.

Il romanzo di Aubry è davvero qualcosa di sorprendente, come non ne leggevo da tantissimo tempo. Non posso negare che mi abbia davvero appassionata, anche quando ai fatti si alternavano le teorie scientifiche di Nigel. La narrazione è in prima persona e ci permette di sentirci profondamente partecipi della vita del protagonista, passando attraverso incredulità, smarrimento, sorpresa e facendo ipotesi di ogni genere. Questo romanzo è davvero appassionante, è una cronaca della vita di Nigel, dalle prime strane manifestazioni a tutto ciò che è seguito dopo, nuovi incontri, nuove identità, viaggi nel tempo, una maggiore consapevolezza di quegli eventi - o meglio non-eventi - che è costretto a subire. Nigel indagherà, costruirà ipotesi, si farà domande e, allo stesso tempo, anche il lettore sarà portato a farsele. Il romanzo è abbastanza lungo, ma non l'ho trovato mai noioso, ero sempre ansiosa di leggere cosa sarebbe accaduto al protagonista, e poi, come vi ho già detto, l'argomento dei viaggi del tempo è davvero uno dei miei preferiti. E qui ce ne sono davvero tanti da leggere e ognuno è interessante, dettagliato, anche i viaggi nel futuro, in cui l'autore tira fuori tanta buona originalità, facendoci conoscere i cambiamenti che ha subito la società e le nuove tecnologie che sono sorte. La suspense nel romanzo funziona davvero molto bene, non abbiamo il tempo di riuscire a capire cosa sta succedendo che veniamo catapultati in un altro evento o in un'altro periodo, pronti ad aggiungere un altro pezzettino al puzzle. Una storia originale e intrigante che ha pienamente catturato la mia attenzione. Aubry è uno scrittore di talento, dalle idee brillanti, che ci ha regalato un protagonista ben caratterizzato e dotato di una forza interiore non indifferente. Unhappenings è un romanzo imprevedibile, che non mancherà di incuriosire il lettore con il suo lato misterioso e di attrarlo grazie all'affascinante tematica dei viaggi del tempo, che qui viene trattata molto bene, meglio che in altri romanzi. E per le più romantiche come me, c'è anche la componente romance da non sottovalutare, una storia d'amore che per Nigel potrebbe considerarsi impossibile, visto il tipo di vita che fa, ma ciò che proverà per Helen, quando la conoscerà, sarà un sentimento talmente forte e totalizzante da non conoscere barriere spaziali o temporali. Purtroppo, la paura di perderla sarà sempre lì, a tormentarlo, nell'attesa di una soluzione, di un cambiamento, che possa dargli la stabilità che cerca da tutta la vita e che merita.
Avventura, mistero, sorprese e tante emozioni vi accompagneranno durante la lettura di questo romanzo, vi assicuro che sarà un fantastico viaggio che varrà la pena fare!

Oggi approda su Coffee&Books un bellissimo blogtour di un romanzo che uscirà domani in America per Curiosity Quills Press. Adoro il genere contemporary e la cover è davvero fantastica! E' un grandissimo piacere per me partecipare a questo blogtour e ringrazio la casa editrice per questa opportunità!

La storia raccontata in Burn Baby Burn Baby non è una storia facile. Le tematiche sono forti, ma vi è anche la dolcezza di una storia d'amore che ha l'intento di smorzare la violenza e la cattiveria di cui è circondato il personaggio di Francis, un ragazzo sfregiato e vittima del bullismo. La nuova arrivata a scuola, Rachel Higgins, riuscirà a dare dignità alle sue giornate e alla sua vita da adolescente.

And Brandon is getting violently frustrated, as his attempts to bully Francis are constantly thwarted. “Hey, Burn Baby,” Brandon Hayley says from across the hall just as we are about to bust out of the school for the weekend. Hearing that name immediately takes me out at the knees. Every time. “Don’t get too close to the fire this weekend!” He makes the noise of sizzling flesh, or rather what he thinks sizzling flesh sounds like. But I can vouch a hundred percent, it’s not at all like the sound real sizzling flesh makes.

“Watch it, Hayley,” Trig says, walking up to Brandon like he’s gonna tear his face off. Trig is ripped, just enough to make Brandon think twice whenever the two of them have a flare-up. He’s not sure he could take Trig. I know he can’t. Trig is like this skilled ninja maniac. He’d take any kid in school with his hands tied behind his back. “Don’t make me take you down in front of such a pretty girl.”

Brandon has the school’s number two hottie draped on his arm. Amy Pritcher. She’s a dark goddess. I sometimes dream about her. Like that would ever happen. Amy smiles coyly at Trig. I swear he gets that same smile from the librarian, my mom, the school nurse, every woman and girl in town. I wish I had that kind of power.

“Don’t let your mouth write cheques your body can’t cash, Twig,” Brandon says. The veins in Trig’s neck bulge at the mention of the hated nickname. He’s anything but a twig, and it drives him ape-shit when Brandon calls him this.

“Watch it, Cro-Magnon. I’d clean the floor with you before you knew what hit you,” Trig says, drawing closer to Brandon and winking at Amy. She’s one step away from giddy laughter; she’s so enthralled by Trig’s attentions. It’s like she’s not even strapped to Brandon’s arm anymore.

“Come on, Trig,” I say. “Just leave it alone.”

“Listen to Burn Baby, Twig,” Brandon says. He’s not even noticing the thing going on between Trig and his girl. Chump. “Keep walking.”

Trig takes a pretend swing at the side of Brandon’s head, coming within a hair from cranking his head in. Brandon flinches away from the swing, even though Trig had no intention of connecting.

“Two for flinching, moron,” Trig says as he slams the door open and disappears into the sunlight beyond. He knows he won. He made the big, mean jock flinch. Mission accomplished.

I walk past Brandon and Amy and join Trig outside, giving Amy a little smile on my way by. I get one in return, a little something for the fantasy bank.

“Holy shit, she’s hot,” I say as I catch up with Trig. “What I wouldn’t give for a piece of—”

“Slow down, dude,” Trig says. “Out of your league. See the way she was looking at me, though? I’m a superstar. You, though, should start with something you can handle before jumping into the big boys’ pool.”

I punch his arm as we make our way out of the schoolyard. “I can handle anything. I’m more than ready, trust me.”

“I see you with, hmm, maybe Tracey Dixon? Emily Houghton? Someone like that. Someone you can ease yourself into, someone not afraid to wear overalls and plaid. Amy Pritcher? No. Man. Just no.”

“Call me around six,” I say. “I’ll let you know when the witch leaves on her non-date.”

“Smoke clouds at six for a coast is clear update. Gotcha,” he says. “I’d walk home with you, man, but I gotta find Georgia. Her parents won’t be home until five and I’m feeling kind of lucky.” Trig pumps his guns at me and smiles. Yeah, he’ll probably get lucky before tonight. “Catch ya later, dude.”

Non ho ancora voglia di lasciarvi stasera e, dopo la prima raffica di fotine su Instagram del mio viaggio a Londra, vi posto una fantastica Cover Reveal americana!

Uscirà l'8 Gennaio "UNHAPPENINGS", romanzo sci-fi di Edward Aubry. Non appena ho visto uno scorcio della copertina e letto la trama ho pensato che questo romanzo avrei dovuto leggerlo per forza e così mi sono fatta avanti. Prossimamente ne saprete molto di più sul romanzo di Aubry, ma per il momento, potete solo godervi questa Cover Reveal e le prime info sulla storia e il suo autore! ;)

Bellissima cover e una trama che sembra davvero sorprendente. Un romanzo che non vedo l'ora di leggere! E a voi, ha incuriosito?
