The rabbit hole, the Garden of Cosmic Speculation

Time remaining: 12 hours, 01 minute

I wake up to a continuous beeping on my phone.

Eyes still blurry, I reach for it blindly until I clasp it by accident from the floor. When I bring it to my face, I am shocked by its size. It looks as big as a plasma TV.

How so, when I am gripping it in the palm of my hand?

The pain in the back of my head attacks me, and I remember that I am under the influence of the pink drink in the bottle.

Did it really shrink me, now that I think I am smaller than my own phone?

But I’m gripping it. What kind of mind-bend is this?

Through my hazy vision, I realize that almost everything around is much bigger than me. Or I am much smaller than them.

Even the small door at the foot of the wall.

Then again, when I reach for it, I can touch it as if it’s small, not big.

The phone keeps beeping.

I push the overly big answer button—the one that is also small—and find more than a hundred messages from an anonymous number.

It must be the Hatter.

What you’re experiencing now is no hallucination—although it is in a way. It’s a medical condition, induced by the pink drink. It’s called the Alice Syndrome."

Mi piacciono le storie di angeli e demoni e questa storia, che parla di una guerra secolare tra loro, promette tanta suspense ma anche tante emozioni! PLUMB STOOD in the driveway, hands on her hips, a piece of bright yellow paper in her hand. Cole groaned, exhausted, as he made his way toward her. The only light was a dim one above the door on the Brotherhood's front porch. 

Plumb waved the paper in the air. "It's four fifteen in the morning, and I'm afraid to even venture why I received a notice for you to appear in front of the Warden later today. And Danny has nothing to say, which could only mean one thing—" Plumb looked him up and down. "With the condition you're in, I'm not sure I want to know where you've been." 

"You probably don't." Cole held his hand out for the summons. 

Plumb handed the paper over, scowling, and Cole slipped it, unopened, into his pocket. 

"Are you going to tell me where you've been?" 

"Thought you didn't want to know." He walked toward the porch. There was a time, when Cole was much younger, that he never would have spoken so bluntly to his Lead, but those days, buried by all of his new responsibilities within the Ward, had faded. They were close to equals now, even though Plumb was about fifteen years older. 

“Cole." 

"I'm tired as hell. I've been up all night." He turned to face her. "Okay? I need to get some sleep." 

"What were you doing in the middle of the night that the Principals couldn't handle?" 

"A girl." 

"Excuse me?”

"No...I, no, I wasn't doing a girl. She just...never mind." He headed for the door, flustered. The last thing he needed to do was think about Kadence like that. His brain already went into some kind of jumble every time her name was mentioned, and it was bad enough that she'd had her hands all over him. 

“You were with Tiffany? Until four in the morning?" Plumb sounded like a disapproving mother. "Cole, I understand you're seventeen, and boys—" 

"I was with Kadence." He wished she would shut up.

Slowly fading into the shadows I step lightly away and down the street making my way to the white sports car with the dimly glowing dashboard lights within. I cross over to the passenger side door and knock quietly on the glass.

The door clicks unlocked. I hesitate before opening the door and getting down into the car. I stare at Reese’s tender eyes as I pull the door closed. The dome light turns off. His eyes continue sparkling with the reds and greens of the dashboard.

“I waited,” he says.

We stare at each other a long time. Eventually, I reach out and take his powerful hand and hold it. “What do you want?” I say. “A cookie?”

Reese grins. An electric tingle shoots through my belly. The car pulls away from the curb and begins moving quickly. The engine is so silent I didn’t even know it was on.

I keep his hand, gripping it tightly as I let both our hands rest on my left thigh. We don’t say another word while he drives quickly through the abandoned residential streets of the Brooklyn night.

The excitement of us fills up the small, contained space inside his expensive, low to the ground sports car. My defenses are down. I bathe in the drowning magic of our undeniable connection. I accept all the manipulation, the inconvenience, the likelihood of being used.

Right now it feels right. I am tired of thinking. I needed to get out of my mind and inside the moment. My eyelids drop. All is black. The only things I feel are his warm fingers laced with mine.

Oggi, per voi, un fantastico Book Blitz! Mi sono subito entusiasmata quando ho letto la trama di questo romanzo new adult che ha davvero tutte le carte in regola per farsi apprezzare e farmi battere il cuore. La storia è quella di una ragazza che un giorno scopre una terribile verità sul padre e vorrebbe solo scappare da essa e condurre una vita normale. Vorrebbe potersi lasciare andare anche all'amore del giovane aspirante scrittore Reece, ma dovrà prima far pace con il suo doloroso passato. Una storia toccante, difficile, che ha catturato la mia attenzione e che probabilmente leggerò. Ho una vera e propria passione per romanzi del genere.

I have a secret and I need to tell someone.

So it went something like this. I passed him every day on my way to and from work. He lived on the sidewalk under the train tracks. Sometimes, he was asleep, a stained blanket on his thin and frail body. Sometimes, he was awake and sitting against a concrete wall, his folded blanket at his side, glazed eyes staring at nothingness. Sometimes, I chose to walk on the other side of the street because I just couldn’t bear it. I couldn’t stand seeing him. And sometimes, when he wasn’t there, I felt my heart sink, wondering if he was okay, if he was hurt, if he had left me again, this time forever. Those were the worst days. I’d spend all day worried about him, feeling guilty, unable to close my mind to the dark thoughts that screamed I was a horrible, horrible person.

The next day, I’d get up earlier than usual, frantic, no coffee, no ironing my clothes, no combing my hair, and dart out of the apartment I shared with two other girls. I’d fly down the Metro escalator.

Once on the platform, I’d shove my way to the front and wait for the flashing lights, signaling an approaching train. Come on, come on, stupid train. There we stood, a crowd of commuters waiting to be whisked off.

My heart leaps into my throat, and time has lost meaning. The entire car leans up on two wheels as it travels to the left, rather than straight ahead. My body presses into my father’s, and I wish more than anything I could hold myself away from him. He reaches for the door handle, but his efforts are futile, as the water has already risen to his window. We continue to move with the current, until it completely picks up the car. The metal tomb flips and turns onto the driver’s side door, snapping off the mirror. I don’t think. I struggle to unbuckle my seatbelt with one hand, the weight of my body pulling the strap taut, and crank down the passenger window with the other. Like a seamless and rehearsed dance, everything happens perfectly. The window is down, the buckle releases its grasp, and I grab on to the edge of the open window. Using the edge of the steering wheel, and my headrest, I push myself up and out the opening.
The car slows, but it’s still moving with the flow of the water, rocking from side to side as the muffled sounds of metal scraping against the earth fill the vessel. “Addy Mae,” he cries up after me. It’s a tone I’ve never heard from him, or at least I don’t recall. I look down at him; his eyes are wide with fear. I feel sorry for him, the need to help him overwhelming me.
I drop to my knees, readying myself to extend a hand. The car jerks unexpectedly, and I fall to my stomach, gripping the rim of the window for support. A cracking sound echoes from inside of the car. I look down to see a large rock has wedged itself firmly into the windshield, cracked glass splintering outward.
 “Goddamn it, Addy, you better get me the hell out of here,” he shouts. There he is, I think. The father I know. My hand is halfway extended when I pause and pull it back. “What the—” The windshield gives way, and the shards rush inward with a gush of water. His expression, his words—they all disappear in an instant, beneath the murky, churning waters.

Ultimamente, nonostante la lista delle cose da fare e dei libri da leggere sia lunghissima, non mi risparmio mai e, anche qui sul blog, ho preso ad occuparmi un po' di più delle pubblicazioni straniere, che ho sempre seguito e che mi appassionano quanto quelle italiane. Oggi un bel Book Blitz in cui si parla di due romanzi che mi hanno sempre incuriosito molto. L'autrice è Michelle Madow e i romanzi che vi presento fanno parte della serie The Secret Diamond Sisters, chick-lit adolescenziale dai toni leggeri, in stile Gossip Girl, ma permeato anche da un po' di mistero. La storia di tre sorelle che, un giorno, scoprono la vera identità del loro padre ed entrano a far parte di un mondo in cui nulla può essere loro negato. Ma ben altri segreti si celano nel loro passato e presto si accorgeranno che quel mondo patinato e sfavillante non è che un'illusione... Una serie davvero interessante questa, che merita un bel posto nella mia affollatissima wishlist e che prima o poi leggerò. Questo Book Blitz prevede, oltre la presentazione dei romanzi e uno speciale estratto (il punto di vista di Savannah Diamon, tratto dal primo libro della serie), anche un fantastico Giveaway, che troverete alla fine del post!

Damien leaned lazily against the door frame. “So you’re the infamous Diamond sisters?” “Infamous?” Savannah asked. “I’m one of the Diamond sisters, but I didn’t know we were infamous.” “I’m kidding.” He laughed. “There’s just been some talk about you three, and everyone’s been curious to meet you.” “Oh, okay.” Savannah knew Adrian Diamond was well known, but she hadn’t realized that meant people would talk about her and her sisters, too. “Who’s everyone?” “Just some of us who go to the Goodman School,” he said. “A few of us live here and in nearby condos. Your dad made a donation for the school’s new sports center, and the talk is you’ll be attending in the fall.” Savannah had hoped her mom would get better before the end of summer so she wouldn’t have to start her sophomore year with total strangers. She bit her lower lip, trying to figure out how to reply in a way that wouldn’t make her sound clueless. “We haven’t talked with our dad about school yet.” Well, they hadn’t talked to their dad at all yet, but Damien didn’t have to know that. And Savannah hadn’t realized that donations—or any payments—were necessary to go to school. At Fairfield High, new kids just signed up on their first day. “Too bad,” Damien said. “You’ll have to let me know when you find out.
